30 YEARS IN BUSINESS IN ENOUGH TIME TO GENERATE A STORY. HERE'S OURS.
The weird, wild, winding and wonderful history of Healing Arts Apothecary.
Dr Henry Skinner built what is now Battle Ground Healing Arts as a home side by side with his medical cliinic in 1930 and served as a primary care physician for all of North Clark County
Dr Stansbury had a wonderful friendship with the elderly Dr Skinner and she is currently only the 2nd owner of the property in nearly a century.
Dr Stansbury completed a medical assisting program with an internship at Stanford Hospital, went on to graduate from San Jose State University with honors, and was accepted to the naturoapthic medical school in Portland, OR.
She moved to Hockinson and commuted to the med school, and also served on several Clark County health and environmental boards.
Dr Stansbury graduated from medical school and established Battle Ground Healing Arts, renting the clinic on Main Street from Dr Henry Skinner.
In this hard-working decade Dr Stansbury wore many hats: mother, physician, business owner, professor, author, gardener and cheif bottle washer.
Dr Stansbury purchased the Main Street clinic and home from Dr Skinner and grew the business into a thriving multidisciplinary facility.
Dr Stansbury also Chaired the Botanical Medicine Department at the National Universtiy of Naturopathic Medicine for many decades starting in 1989.
Dr Stansbury converted what was a 1 car garage on Main Street into a medicine dispensary and called it our NATURAL GOODS store.
Here is a photo of Dr Stansbury's daughter's lemonade stand in front of the garage that is now the apothecary.
The Natural Goods Store was a huge success and brought in patients to our practice and people curious to learn more about alternative medicine.
Dr Stansbury mentored many students and novice herbalists including someone who went on to set up an apothecary a few blocks away.
Our volunteer apprentices learned how Dr Stansbury made her medicines, obtained her goods, ran her business, and other skills unique to the biz.
Dr Stansbury was awarded an ethnobotany research grant and traveled to South America frequently, plus taught at 6-10 conferences per year, adding up to being away from Battle Ground over half of the year for a decade.
One of our volunteers was contracted to run our Natural Goods Store while Dr Stansbury traveled extensively.
One of our staff purchased our herb shop inventory to run our store for her own profit and renamed the shop B.A.N.G - Battle Ground Apothecary and Natural Goods and enjoyed our patient referrals and well established platform of support.
Our apothecary partner asked us repeatedly to employ her adult daughter and allow her to live in our home. We finally relented but quickly lived to regret it.
Our apothecary partner started the web domain bghealingarts.com for our entire group at Battle Ground Healing Arts.
Dr Stansbury was concerned over the many errors in the herb list and we began to struggle over this and many other issues.
For Anyone who knows herbs:
This was the start of 2 difficult years for our apothecary as we struggled with the family running it to address the website issues, the lax buisness hours, the manner in which the phone was being answered, and the many late night guests in our home.
THEY NEVER RESPONDED
Our arrangement with the family running our apothecary broke down entirely and we were subjected to what we felt was a backlash of malice and spite.
Tuesday, August 11, 2015 9:32 PM Email From: D.D. To: Dr Stansbury
"On the phone we caught you listening to highly confidential information exchanged in conversations between our patrons and other doctor’s patients. We had to put a sign up to inform of HIPAA violation. "
Our partner did indeed post a notice on our business because Dr Stansbury was answering her own phone.
Our partners often got the business' mail and in 2015
100 items of mail went missing including checks, a medical license, insurance renewal notices, and legal city and county mailings.
This had never happened before and has never happened since. Some of the items were recovered from the family's trash when they departed.
This same year, our apothecary partner wrote Dr Stansbury an angry email when she found drug paraphernalia in her daughter's loft and her daughter said that Dr Stansbury's family put it there.
We found multiple methamphetamine pipes in the daughter's trash and in the apartment the day they quit the premises and when reported, again the daughter told the police that Dr Stansbury put them there.
In August, we believe that our partners trespassed in Dr Stansbury's home while she was out of the country and our caretaker was away for several nights. There were no signs of forced entry and nothing was stolen except the master key set, their rental contracts, and a Court Summons. The theives locked the deadbolts after themselves with keys they stole.
The daughter admitted that they did this directly to Dr Stansbury in April of the following year, saying that all the stress had caused her to not think clearly.
Dr Stansbury changed 4 plane tickets and flew home from Peru upon learning of all the shenanigans evolving on the home front.
She gave notice that tenancy of the apothecary and the loft were to be terminated.
The next few months were a horror of torment.
Within several days of terminating tenancy, water came streaming through Dr Stansbury's music room ceiling from the daughter’s bathroom in the loft apartment above.
The plumber reported the U joint below bathroom sink had been loosened, and he told us that thicould only have been purposeful.
A photo of our ceiling from the damage is featured here.
Large posters were put up in every window of the space rented to the duo featuing libelous and malicious statements, accusing Dr Stansbury of stealing items and spot lit at night.
The family also placed large posters in every window of their car and parked it in our small front lot on Main St.
We had our apothecary back, and Happy Days Returned!!
In April of 2016, one of the family apologized to Dr Stansbury and confessed that they had taken the keys, the mail, the court summons, and all of harassment detailed herein.
Yet just a few months later she entered our apothecary and ranted that we must have spies in her new business location and that we were stealing all of their ideas.
Our Good Years continued and we installed a new roof and added a new solarium on to our apothecary to accomodate the growing business.
We recieved communication from someone concerned about Dr Stansbury's safety because of the daughter's belief that Dr Stansbury was spying on her through her computer and other electronic devices, and was attempting to poison her with mercury.
In an email to this individual the daughter writes that Dr Stansbury is... “cyber stalking my mother and I through our security cameras, cell phones and laptops ....her...and who knows how many others... were monitoring me round the clock,.... It’s gotta be boring as sh*t watching me round the clock.
This individual wrote to Dr Stansbury that " [she] is filled with so much hate that someone needs to stop her."
Here is one of many threatening quotes from the daughter:
“I have so much dirt on her to put her away…. I can do this from anywhere….Main reason I have sat on all this ammo for so long is because there are a few individuals that are also tied in with the doc, and I’m afraid that they could be very well targeted in the process. ….Instead I study and plot wisely, until I’m sure the act and time is right. Dr Jill Stansbury is her name.”
2018 was another stellar year!
We invested in a solar roof, installed a rain catchement system and became a GREEN BUSINESS!
We also continued addressing confusion in the community over our trademark.
Because our former apothecary partner was using the name B.A.N.G - Battle Ground Apothecary and Natural Goods, Dr Stansbury decided not to go immediately back to calling our medicinary the Natural Goods Store.
Instead, we chose
Healing Arts Apothecary
befitting of our trademark
Battle Ground Healing Arts.
Our business continued to thrive and we added an awning to match the new solarium to improve the curb appeal of the elderly property.
This year we noticed that not only was B.A.N.G continuing to use our trademarked bghealingarts as a domain name, some of their google listings displayed our entire business names and we had to contact Google to have them removed.
Dr Stansbury asked our former partner if she could take her out for coffee and discuss ways that we might address the issue. It was not to be and the next day her daughter Brandy gave our business a 1 star review shown above.
3OTH YEAR ANNIVERSARY!
This summer we celebrated Dr Stansbury's 30 years in business with a Farmer's Market every Saturday throughout the summer and an official ribbon cutting, party and celebration.
Dr Stansbury also recieved an award - The Order of the University from the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, OR
Dr Stansbury's 3rd textbook in a series of 5 was published and is receiving rave reviews!
Another wonderful year!!!
Thanks to all for your business and support.
